Who are we and why are we doing this?

The Einsiedeln project is a collaboration between two Classicists at Brock University.

Dr. Anton G. Jansen has a PhD in Classical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an MA from Queen’s University, and BA and BSc from the University of Alberta.  His specific area of expertise is Mycenaean Greece.  He teaches Mythology, Greek, and Greek History at Brock.

Dr. Carol U. Merriam has a PhD in Classics from The Ohio State University, as well as an MA and BA from Queen’s.  Her area of expertise is Latin Epic and Elegy.

We’re both fascinated by Rome and its history.  A few years ago we came across mention of the Einsiedeln itinerary, and were fascinated by this glimpse of 8th century Rome.  We decided to follow up on it.

So, we spent a winter sabbatical in Rome, walking the routes, photographing what we saw that reflected the itineraries in the document.  The results of that work will be appearing on this site.
